Courtesy Steven Smith’s 84 off 54 balls, Rising Pune Supergiant beat Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets in the second match of the Indian Premier League on Thursday. Set a target of 185, Pune finished with 187 for 3 in 19.5 overs. Apart from Steven Smith, Ajinkya Rahane played his part, smashing 60 off 34 at the top of the order.   Earlier, despite regular wickets falling in their innings, Mumbai got 184 for 8 in 20 overs. While there were no big scores, the man who stood out was Hardik Pandya who made 35 not out in a mere 15 balls. There were also some other useful contributions. Jos Buttler made 38 off just 19 balls and Nitish Rana scored 34 off 28 deliveries. For Pune, Imran Tahir got 3 wickets, conceding 28 runs in his quota of four overs. Also chipping in for Pune was Rajat Bhatia who got 2 for 14 in his three overs.
It was a change of guard for Pune who had Steven Smith out for the toss as he replaced MS Dhoni as the team’s captain this year and in continuing the pattern of the IPL from last year, the Aussie had no hesitation in batting first on a surface that looked like it was full of runs. Earlier on Day 1 of the tournament, hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs.
On Day 3, Gujarat Lions will host Kolkata Knight Riders. While Gujarat are appearing in their second season of the tournament, Kolkata have scooped two IPL titles in their history and will be making their 10th consecutive appearance with respect to seasons in the tourney.
